Notes on English Grammar Tenses for Grade 10 Students
Introduction to Tenses
- Tenses refer to the time of action or state of being in a sentence.
- There are three main tenses: Past, Present, and Future.
- Each main tense has four aspects: Simple, Continuous (Progressive), Perfect, and Perfect Continuous.
1. Present Tense
a. Simple Present
- Usage: Regular actions, universal truths, habits.
- Structure: Subject + base verb (+ s/es for third person singular).
- Examples: She reads every day. The sun rises in the east.
b. Present Continuous
- Usage: Actions happening now or around the current time, future plans.
- Structure: Subject + am/is/are + verb + ing.

c. Present Perfect
- Usage: Actions that happened at an unspecified time, actions that have a connection to the present.
- Structure: Subject + has/have + past participle.
- Examples: She has read that book. We have lived here for ten years.
d. Present Perfect Continuous
- Usage: Actions that started in the past and are still continuing or were recently completed.
- Structure: Subject + has/have + been + verb + ing.
- Examples: She has been reading for two hours. They have been working here since June.
2. Past Tense
a. Simple Past
- Usage: Completed actions in the past.
- Structure: Subject + past form of the verb.
- Examples: She read the book. They went to the park.
b. Past Continuous
- Usage: Actions that were in progress at a specific time in the past.
- Structure: Subject + was/were + verb + ing.
- Examples: She was reading when I called. They were playing soccer at 5 PM.
c. Past Perfect
- Usage: Actions that were completed before another action in the past.
- Structure: Subject + had + past participle.
- Examples: She had read the book before he arrived. They had left by the time we got there.
d. Past Perfect Continuous
- Usage: Actions that were ongoing in the past up until another point in the past.
- Structure: Subject + had + been + verb + ing.
- Examples: She had been reading for two hours before dinner. They had been working there for years before the company closed.
3. Future Tense
a. Simple Future
- Usage: Actions that will happen in the future.
- Structure: Subject + will/shall + base verb.
- Examples: She will read the book. They will go to the park.
b. Future Continuous
- Usage: Actions that will be in progress at a specific time in the future.
- Structure: Subject + will be + verb + ing.
- Examples: She will be reading at 6 PM. They will be playing soccer tomorrow afternoon.
c. Future Perfect
- Usage: Actions that will be completed before a specific time in the future.
- Structure: Subject + will have + past participle.
- Examples: She will have read the book by then. They will have left by the time you arrive.
d. Future Perfect Continuous
- Usage: Actions that will be ongoing up until a specific time in the future.
- Structure: Subject + will have been + verb + ing.
- Examples: She will have been reading for two hours by 8 PM. They will have been working here for five years by next month.
Tips for Teaching Tenses
- Use Timelines: Visual aids help students understand the time aspect of each tense.
- Practice with Examples: Encourage students to make sentences using each tense.
- Identify Keywords: Highlight words that often signal a particular tense (e.g., "yesterday" for past, "now" for present continuous).
